A rock moves fourteen centimeters uphill.

That is how Kagoshima's morning gets worse.

Ash has already entered the office before Director Shinichiro Tsuji arrives. Sakurajima is across the bay doing what an active volcano does. Ferries still run. Children still go to school. Nobody mistakes normal life for safety.

Reality Services checks the instruments.

The mountain has produced a sequence of small tremors.

What moved?

Unknown.

What stopped moving?

Also unknown.

Good. Two unknowns before breakfast and nobody has mistaken an answer for evidence.

Then the impossible movement spreads.

Objects begin behaving as though the mountain has revised the direction of consequence. Monitoring systems remain accurate while the thing they are monitoring becomes less interested in ordinary geometry.

The office can model pressure, ash, tremor, wind and evacuation.

It cannot make Sakurajima accept the model.

Kagoshima becomes a fight over the difference between measuring danger and believing measurement has made danger obedient.

Reality Services would prefer certainty.

The mountain has other deliverables.

Included free: a complete story from The Office of the Second Census, whose subjects are generally quieter but not necessarily more cooperative.
