The Northeast has documentation proving none of this is happening.

A Danbury hatter finds an ugly gray fedora trembling beneath his hands. A dead woman in Lily Dale borrows her daughter’s body to clean a refrigerator. On North Brother Island, a heron returns wearing a hospital bracelet dated in the future. The government has departments for each problem. This does not help.

The disturbances move through the region’s favorite machinery: records, credentials, inherited authority, property, quarantine, evidence, and the firm conviction that any disaster becomes manageable once it has a case number. Beneath Scranton, two police officers find the things the city put underground and agreed not to see. On Glen Island, a wedding reception acquires a turnstile and learns what free admission actually costs. Along Delaware Bay, a pilot chair makes absence visible.

These stories are dryly funny until the human claim becomes unavoidable. A city can preserve its official explanation or protect the people the explanation excludes. It cannot always do both.

What it feels like to read

This collection reads like municipal noir invaded by the supernatural: brisk investigations, beautifully wrong objects, stubborn professionals, and institutions forced to confront the people their procedures made invisible.

Three stories inside

  • The Dead Had the Hour: For one minute each day, the dead stop using mediums and begin using the living.
  • The Things Under Scranton: A stolen excavator leads two cops into a second city under the city they patrol.
  • The Island That Quarantined Tomorrow: North Brother Island detains people for diseases they have not contracted yet.

Buy Northeast for the heron with the future bracelet. Stay for the municipal hearing about why tomorrow is now a public-health violation.
